Blu-ray Review: Action and Drama Face Off in ‘Den of Thieves’

April 30, 2018Ben MK

Movies don't get much more testosterone-filled than Den of Thieves. On one side, a gang of thieves. On the other, a group of cops who don't exactly play by the book. But when the alpha dogs from each crew (Pablo Schreiber and Gerard Butler) find themselves at odds with one another, who will be the first to surrender?

Synopsis: A gritty Los Angeles crime saga which follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles. Den of Thieves explodes onto Blu-ray with a rough-and-ready 1080p encode that captures every action-packed moment, as well as the scenes of character drama in between. Image quality is crisp and clean, colors are robust, and contrast levels are spot-on, all of which contribute to a solid visual experience as the story winds its way through the sun-scorched streets of L.A. As for the audio presentation, it's no slouch either. Automatic gunfire punctures the silence with ferocity, and the sounds of screeching tires, roaring engines and wailing police sirens all make their presence strongly felt as part of this effective Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound mix.

VVS Films' single-disc Blu-ray release includes the following extras:

  • Alpha Males (2:05) - A featurette that gives a high-level look at the film's two opposing sides.
  • Into the Den (2:06) - Another brief look at the movie's characters, as well as the story.
  • Alameda Corridor (3:12) - A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film's intense, climactic action sequence.
  • Deleted Scenes (23:16) - Eleven scenes ("Donnie Arrives at Enson's House," "Donnie at the Salvage Yard," "Donnie Hotel," "Enson & Donnie in the Van," "Enson & Maloa," "Enson in the Office," "Merrimen and Boys Get Ready," "Nick & Deb at the Beach," "Nick & Deb at the Market," "Nick & Boys in the Hallway" and "Nick Comes Home").
  • Feature Commentary - Writer/Director Christian Gudegast and Producer Tucker Tooley talk about shooting in L.A. and Atlanta, the cinematography, the stunt work, the sound design and the score, the actors and their performances, the research that went into making the movie feel authentic, and more.

Den of Thieves is available from VVS Films as of April 24th, 2018. The Blu-ray features English and French Dolby TrueHD 5.1 tracks and is presented with English and French subtitles. The total runtime is 2 hrs. 20 min.
