Review: ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ is a Surprisingly Satisfying Sequel

From director Thurop Van Orman, The Angry Birds Movie 2 is a contagiously fun and genuinely entertaining film for all ages.

Picking up after the events of the original, this sequel takes viewers back to Bird Island, where Red (Jason Sudeikis) is revered as a hero and has become extremely popular for helping to protect the island, along with his friends Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride). Red continues to engage in pranks aimed at Leonard (Bill Hader), the king of the pigs on the adjacent Piggy Island; however, they quickly call a truce and team up to protect their homes from a new threat.

Zeta (Leslie Jones), who hails from the frozen Eagle Island, wants both Bird Island and Piggy Island for her own. As a result, Red and Leonard, as well as new characters of both the flightless bird and pig variety — Silver (Rachel Bloom), Courtney (Awkwafina) and Garry (Sterling K. Brown) — must stop Zeta before it's too late.

There's actually quite a lot that The Angry Birds Movie 2 does well. It's surprisingly funny, with clever writing and silly jokes, not to mention a great cast of diverse characters, as well as an adorable side plot featuring the incredibly cute hatchlings. The characters are wonderfully brought to life by the movie's incredible cast, who really make use of their comedic skills to bring life to a film that could have definitely suffered in less experienced hands. And while this is a sequel to a movie based on a mobile game, it's far better than you may expect.

Though the film could do without its opening sequence, which explains Red's motivations clearly before proceeding to reiterate it repeatedly throughout the story, once you let go and just enjoy it for what it is, you'll find that it's a great time. Suffice to say, children will be delighted with The Angry Birds Movie 2's ridiculous storytelling, but its sharp jokes and writing ought to provide a good time for adults as well.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 releases August 13, 2019 from Sony Pictures. The film has an MPAA rating of PG for rude humor and action. Its runtime is 1 hr. 36 min.
