'Bad Genius' TIFF Next Wave Review: High School Heist

Bad Genius is a tension-filled and thrilling Thai heist film from director Nattawut Poonpiriya, which tells the story of a cheating scheme devised by straight-A student Lynn (Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying) and her friends.

Lynn, a scholarship kid at an expensive private high school, realizes an opportunity when her friends, Grace (Eisaya Hosuwan) and Pat (Teeradon Supapunpinyo), approach her about her helping them and their other classmates cheat on an exam. Lynn then comes up with a plan with much higher stakes, and a much higher payout — taking a standardized university enrollment test in Australia with another student, Bank (Chanon Santinatornkul), and sending the answers back to those in Thailand.

Bad Genius is an enthralling, steadily-paced movie that never feels too long, and no moment is missed to add to the building tension. It's also incredibly intelligent, with creative solutions that are full of smart and original writing, exploring themes like classism, and it features brilliant performances from the well-rounded cast, who all manage to deliver a fun, intense moviegoing experience all the way through.

Bad Genius screens Sunday, February 18th at TIFF Next Wave. Its runtime is 2 hrs. 10 min.
